Thirty-Seven

The smirk Marco flashed, accompanied by a knowing side-eye, petrified Stuart. Marco grabbed a pint glass and polished it, eyes still locked on Stuart. His first instinct was to bolt, but he was rooted to the barstool. He blinked, unable to pull his gaze from Marco’s glare.

“You . . .” Stuart started.

“What’ll it be?” Marco said, his voice now carrying a distinct Irish lilt.

“I . . .”

“Are you all right, lad? You look ill,” Marco said.

Stuart’s gaze fell to the nametag on Marco’s chest. Jerry.

It had to be Marco. There was no way it could be a coincidence. Of course Axel would recruit employees—even if they weren’t his yet—to execute his scheme.

“Did you forget your nametag today, Marco?” Stuart asked.

“No. What are you on about?”

“You can drop the charade. I spent a decent amount of time with you and Axel. I know who you are.”

Marco/Jerry leaned on the bar, his arms spread. He cocked his head and said, “I’ve never set eyes on you before . . . sir.”

“Where’s Axel? Where are your buddies? The ones from Venice?”

“Venice?” the bartender laughed. “I haven’t set foot in that bloody town for ages. You sure you don’t need a doctor?”

Stuart slid from the stool and stepped back. His mind attempted to process his predicament, find some logical way to align what was happening.

Another server, a blond woman, popped through the swinging doors Marco/Jerry had emerged from and called, “Jerry!” She continued in another language, waving him on.

“Duty calls,” he said, his Irish brogue full on now. “All hands on deck.”
